Monique is a young designer born and educated in Perth, Western Australia. Growing up in the mellow northern suburbs of Perth she was creatively nourished by her parents and the quietness of the city allowed her imagination to grow on its own accord. Although tomboyish while growing up Monique soon found a love of beautiful things and beautiful fabrics where she became inspired by the richness of evening wear she saw on the red carpet. She did however see certain elegance and flawed beauty in old and worn garments and items that had been made and used completely with love. This now creates the basis of what her label represents; hyper feminine tomboy.
Matangi is a bold rebellious label, our range inspired by the duality of the goddess Matangi herself, representing hyper feminine tomboy clothing. Although the two are a seeming anomaly, these ideas depict the goddesses’ two contrasting personalities and challenge our perceptions of evening wear. Boyish cool silhouettes and elegant fabrics are used to curate a sporty chic look and an immaculately executed transformation from street to night.
